I only use stereo for solo or sometimes singer/acoustic (acoustic in stereo). Room mic time-aligned on one or two tracks sometimes for less generic sound. Sometimes one mic only, at a distance of 3-6 feet. For hard rock I have only used closed-miked mono tracks, but I mainly record pop-rock.
